Our Lady of Kibeho: A Prophetic Warning and Hope

Discover the Church-approved apparitions of Our Lady of Kibeho in Rwanda, her chilling prophecy of genocide, and the healing message she offers the world today.

🙏 Introduction

In a quiet African village in 1981, the Virgin Mary appeared to three schoolgirls with a message that would shake a nation—and the world. Her name was Our Lady of Kibeho. She came with a voice full of love, but also with a sorrow that would later prove to be prophetic.

Though initially ignored, the messages she gave—of repentance, prayer, and the dangers of a world turning away from God—foretold one of the most devastating tragedies of the 20th century: the Rwandan genocide. But her message wasn’t only for Rwanda. It was for all of us.

In this article, we explore the story of Our Lady of Kibeho, the girls who saw her, the prophecy that unfolded, and what her message means for believers today.

🌟 Who Was Our Lady of Kibeho?

Our Lady of Kibeho is a Marian apparition officially recognized by the Catholic Church. She appeared in the village of Kibeho, Rwanda, beginning on November 28, 1981. The first visionary was Alphonsine Mumureke, a high school student at a girls’ boarding school.

She was soon joined by two others: Nathalie Mukamazimpaka and Marie Claire Mukangango. These young women were given powerful visions—some joyful, some sorrowful—and asked to share the Virgin’s urgent call to conversion.

The Virgin referred to herself as “Mother of the Word” (Nyina wa Jambo in Kinyarwanda), and her messages emphasized prayer, humility, repentance, and the deep importance of suffering offered to God.

🔥 The Prophetic Warning: Blood and Silence

On August 15, 1982, before a crowd of thousands, the girls fell into ecstasy and began crying out in horror. They described visions of people killing each other, rivers filled with blood, and terrifying scenes of human suffering.

Though many found these messages too disturbing, the Church and investigators documented them carefully. Tragically, twelve years later, the horrors they saw became reality: the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, in which nearly one million people were slaughtered in just 100 days.

Even Marie Claire, one of the visionaries, was killed during this time—adding a heartbreaking layer to the already sorrowful messages she had once received.

⛪ Church Recognition and Pilgrimage Site

In 2001, the Catholic Church officially approved the apparitions of Our Lady of Kibeho—making it the only Church-approved Marian apparition in Africa.

Today, the site of the apparitions has become a place of pilgrimage and healing, drawing visitors from around the world. A beautiful shrine, Masses, and devotions are held there, including the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows, a prayer Our Lady specifically asked Marie Claire to promote.

This devotion, once forgotten, has been revived through Kibeho and is now prayed by thousands seeking mercy, healing, and spiritual renewal.

📖 A Message for the Whole World

Our Lady’s message was not just for Rwanda. She spoke of a world in danger of forgetting God—where love was growing cold, where pride and violence were replacing humility and forgiveness.

Her tears were not of despair, but of compassion. She wept like a mother watching her children walk into danger, hoping they would turn back. And her call still echoes today.

Whether you’re in Africa, America, or anywhere else in the world, Kibeho offers a wake-up call: to return to prayer, to embrace the sacraments, and to listen when Heaven speaks.
